GIS in Your Classroom: Incorporate Mapping Activities with a Free Platform and Ready Made Lesson Plans

Course Description

Utilizing GIS enables students to think critically about real-world content and make inferences using data. Students have the opportunity to analyze, create and make connections with real data and real issues in all content areas. Learn ways to incorporate the ArcGIS Online platform into your classroom. You will use lesson plans prepared by ArcGIS, plans created by other educators and learn how to create your own maps.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • know how and why to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for instruction
  • do basic tasks in ArcGIS online, including creating, modifying and saving maps
  • request and manage an ArcGIS online account for their school
  • locate existing GIS lesson plans (GeoInquiries) to utilize with their students
  • locate existing maps and storymaps
  • utilize those with their students create a storymap
