Adventures in the Classroom
Description: Get active in the classroom and bring learning to life by using experiential education techniques that leaves learners with real-world experiences. Bring those experiences around to reflection and relate them back to understanding the content. This completes the learning cycle. As John Dewey says, "Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature to demand thinking; learning naturally results."
Authentic Assessment for Authentic Learning
Description: A move toward more authentic tasks and outcomes improves teaching and learning. In authentic assessments, learners have greater clarity about their obligations and are asked to master more engaging tasks, and facilitators can see assessment results as meaningful and useful for improving instruction. Description: Welcome to the module on Blended Learning for the Customized Learning Series-Artiste! The module uses the eBook Blended-Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools as our main text, as well as some articles and videos. The course incorporates four phases to help you implement a Blended Learning environment in your classroom. What is Blended Learning, what could it mean for you, and how can you move to a Blended Learning environment in your classroom? A unit on how to assess in the Blended Learning classroom is also included in this course.
Changing Assessment Grading Practices
Description: Grading only on achievement focuses solely on learners’ proficiency on well-defined course objectives. It fundamentally changes what grades measure and how they communicate that information. While grading practices that emphasize only achievement and proficiency are gaining in popularity, these practices have still not been widely implemented. Engage in discussions about ineffective grading practices and their remedies. Make informed decisions about what your district needs to change in your grading practices to move away from grading and toward performance assessments.

Computer Science: “The Makey Makey Invention Literacy Workshop for Educators”
Description: The Makey Makey Invention Literacy Workshop for Educators is a fun, hands-on learning experience where you’ll learn how to teach Invention Literacy, Making and Design Thinking using the award winning Makey Makey invention kit. We’ll explore how to teach circuits and conductivity using Makey Makeys and then put those skills to use to design your own invention with the meaningful integration of content standards.
Computer Science: Robotics (Ozobots, Spheros, We-Do, Dash)
Description: Learn a collaborative and innovative way to teach STEM activities incorporating robotics and technology, coding and 21st century skills. Content Gap Analysis to Improve Student Achievement
Description: Curriculum and Gap Analysis will help you answer: Why do I teach what I teach when I teach it? Do my assessments match my instruction? Do I teach the content to the depths of understanding embedded in the standards? Which standards am I hitting frequently; which standards am I touching upon; which standards am I missing? During a series of events you will be equipped with content diaries, content organizers and other tools to use throughout the year to provide data to find answers to these questions, locate resources to fill your gaps and remove instruction that is inappropriate for your grade level.

Description: Gifted students and accelerated learners are actually two separate types of students. This workshop will cover how to identify and work with both types of students to meet their needs. Description: This is an online, self-paced class using the book, Inevitable Too! The Total Leader Embraces Mass Customized Learning by Charles Schwahn & Beatrice McGarvey as our main text, as well as some articles and videos. The course incorporates strategic design, the five leadership domains of the total leader and empowering change. Leadership development is ultimately personal development.
Leading Socratic Seminars: Teaching Civility and Thoughtfulness
Description: This workshop is experiential and provides intensive practice to develop the skills of seminar leadership. Participants will engage in a large group seminar followed by guided practice with designing and leading small group seminars.
Learner Agency Online Course
Description: As education evolves toward customized learning, the need for self-directed learners become critical for the learning environment. With leaners at different places in the curriculum, working on several projects and in changing physical environments, learners will need to develop a strong sense of personal responsibility. The Learner Agency work done at TIE supports educators on implementing these ideas. This class will introduce you to tools and resources to support this work for the learners. By the end of this course, you will complete a full 10-day curriculum to begin implementing into your learning environment right away!
Description: This course uses the book "Eight Myths of Learner Disengagement" to investigate how classroom practices influence engagement, including types of tasks assigned, quality of facilitator-learner relations, and peer dynamics. The course encourages participants to recognize that engagement is not just on-task behavior, but incorporates behavioral, emotional, and cognitive practices. Participants will consider a variety of instructional practices and their connection to learner engagement.
Learner Motivation: Teaching From Within
Description: The challenge of motivating learners to learn has been central to the teaching profession throughout history. Unfortunately, many motivational strategies have had the opposite of their intended effect on learners. This course is built around concepts explored in Bob Sullo’s book, The Motivated Learner and the 2012 TIE Media film, Teaching From Within. Teaching From Within is a film and a way of teaching that promote an inside-out (intrinsic) approach to learning. Once we strip away intrusive motivational add-ons like rewards, fear and coercion, the natural human drive to learn, explore and grow can guide us as teachers and as Learners toward learning that is natural, sustainable, and never ending. Participants will analyze their own and their school’s approaches to motivating learners, view the film itself, explore research around learner motivation, and develop goals and approaches for beginning the shift from problematic external motivational approaches to teaching and learning that comes from within.
Make Learning Personal
Description: This is a four-unit module about personalizing learning. If you have read the book, Inevitable: Mass Customized Learning, you already have some knowledge about what we are talking about. In this workshop we will reference both books. Personalized learning is starting to happen all over the country and we need to not only understand WHAT it is, but also how we can make it happen in our schools.
Mindset – The First Step to Learner Agency
Description: Learner Agency is possessing the mindset and know-how to act in a manner which empowers and positions learners for a life-time of learning. In this phase of Learner Agency, facilitators become aware of their own mindset as they promote the change in learner mindsets. Tools and resources are provided to help facilitators develop growth mindsets in their customized classrooms. This is one of the most important steps to begin the change process and build learner agency.
Office 365 Teacher Academy
Description: This six-hour Academy allows participants to take a deep dive into cloud-based tools for the classroom, with a special focus on topics such as file storage, collaboration and communication using Office 365. It will also give educators the opportunity to apply their learning towards the end of each part of the session – reflecting on the topics covered, as well as strategizing on how they can be put to the best use in the classroom or with other educators.
Description: Some subject matter is best taught face-to-face, while other things can be taught in an online environment. Some students do really well with online learning, while others struggle. There is much that goes into the designing of an online course. This course uses many articles and videos for research and the opportunity to create on online class. The module will cover what is the learning environment, active learning, real-world application, assessment, differentiation, ethics, as well as other topics.
Open Education Resources: Content for Your Classroom
Description: Open Education Resources (OER) are freely available courses, textbooks, activities and more that are licensed for reuse. Incorporating them can save money, empower teachers and provide students with relevant, high quality content. This session will cover OER resources that are being developed in South Dakota schools along with other resources that are freely available for your school.

Description: Explore the creation of personalized digital textbooks incorporating free Open Education Resources (OER). This training will provide examples of OER textbooks, copyright, platform and content considerations and resources to incorporate into your own textbook.
Project Based Learning
Description: Project-Based Learning is spreading quickly and many educators are seeking it out to offer more meaningful and engaging lessons for their students. The traditional classroom where learning occurs in the vacuum of separate and distinct islands will soon be replaced by interconnected curriculum via authentic inquiry based learning experiences. There are many Project-Based resources available today. One of the goals for this class is to expose you to these resources and help you develop your own personal notion of Project-Based Lessons within the context of your own classroom.
Structural Rebuild Facilitation
Description: CL Structural Rebuild utilizes evidence-based materials and processes for your planning team to tackle the tough issues of weight-bearing-walls such as - grading practices, schedules and courses, grade level assignments vs mastery levels, rigid curriculum vs flexible curriculum, in-school learning vs in-world learning, and 9-month school year vs year-round - learning opportunities which can hinder progress toward personalized learning. A learning specialist from TIE will work with your leadership team throughout the school year with onsite work days as well as online meetings. TIE also provides data tools to provide a snapshot of the instructional/learning practices in your district that can assist your leadership team for better analysis, strategizing, and decision-making.
Teaching and Learning with Generations Y and Z
Description: This workshop explores the similarities and differences among generations in regard to teaching and learning. Characteristics of today's learners from Generation Y (millennials) and from Generation Z will be examined. Strategies for engaging these generations of learners will be shared.
