The Foundational Reading Skills classes will focus on the Big 5 Literacy Skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. The classes will include both a research-informed knowledge base and practical sample lesson models. The training skills and materials can be used for implementation into teaching practices during the school year.
The first two days of training will be held to introduce the Big 5 Literary Skills. The third date allows teachers to share with their colleagues how the implementation of the Big 5 worked with their students and to model activities/lessons created. Two Zoom meetings about reading screeners and assessment will be required for those taking graduate credit.
