Math

  • AIMS – (Achieve Improvement in Math and Science) focuses on individual teacher professional development in inquiry- based math. AIMS II Math focused on standardsbased, technology-rich mathematics curriculum review, selection, implementation and professional development at the school and/or district level.

  • PRIME – (Promoting Reflective Inquiry in Math Education) is a five-year, targeted Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) project aimed at improving the academic achievement of all students in the Rapid City Area Schools.

  • South Dakota COUNTS is a three-year, $3 million initiative that targets math instruction at the elementary level. It addresses one of the primary goals of the Governor’s 2010 Education Initiative, which is to ensure math and reading proficiency by third grade.

Reading

  • Reading and Writing Strategies for Content Areas This type of workshop has been offered in many different formats. It can range from a focused three days session to an embedded process occuring throughout multiple days of the school year.
  • 6+1 Writing – This writing model provides a framework for instruction and scoring to identifying the specific characteristics that contribute to good writing.
  • Elementary Reading and Writing – Instruction can be a one-day training focused on particular research-based strategies or reading/writing component (comprehension, vocabulary, reading/ writing workshop, etc.), or can be a more comprehensive training with embedded instruction throughout the school year. The strategies taught can be transferred to most reading content areas.
  • Improving Comprehension Skills for All Content Areas – This type of workshop may focus on researched-based strategies that help students develop into proficient readers, regardless of the content area. Teachers learn strategies for activating prior knowledge, questioning the text, drawing inferences, determining importance to recognize main ideas and summarize information, monitoring comprehension, rereading and employing fix-up strategies, using sensory images, and synthesizing text.

  • Mountains of History – is a regional comprehensive professional development experience designed to deepen the content knowledge, and historical teaching strategies of teachers.
